Splash-happy budget phone cuts corners

Design

Similar to Verizon's Hydro Elite, the Vibe has a simple, austere design with straight edges and clean lines. This look is more modern than past Kyocera devices, and because it doesn't have any port coverings, you wouldn't be able to tell at first glance that this is actually a water-resistant handset. It measures 5.02 inches tall, 2.5 inches wide, and 0.43-inch thick (127.4 x 63.5 x 10.9mm), and can fit easily in your front jeans pockets or handbag. Weighing in at 4.9 ounces (139g), it's also lightweight, and is comfortable to hold. The textured battery door also helps with grip and prevents it from slipping around on slick surfaces.
On the left edge is a volume rocker, while the top houses a 3.5mm headphone jack and the sleep/power button. The right has a shortcut button for quick access to the camera (which you can customize to launch video instead, if that's what you prefer), and on the very bottom is a Micro-USB port for charging.

On the back are an 8-megapixel camera and its corresponding flash, as well as two small slits for the audio speaker. A small indentation on the bottom edge allows you to peel off the back cover to reveal the 2,000mAh battery, the SIM card, and the microSD card slot right above. On the underside of the back cover, you can see the water seal (in orange) that protects the phone's innards.
The Hydro Vibe's 4.5-inch IPS screen has a 960x540-pixel resolution and is impact resistant. This means that it's a bit more durable against the daily abuses that people put their devices through, and that it should be able to survive a reasonable fall without cracking. As for the screen, it is responsive to the touch, and I didn't find any trouble tapping on apps or typing on the virtual keyboard. The resolution isn't very crisp compared to higher-tiered handsets, but text and images still look very clear. It also has a wide viewing angle, and I had no problem looking at the phone in bright sunlight.

Water resistant construction

Certified to satisfy IPX5 and IPX7 standards for waterproofing, the Hydro Vibe can survive a good dunking. It can be submerged in up to a 3.28 feet (1 meter) of water for 30 minutes. Just be sure that your back cover is completely secured.
Though I wasn't able to test my review unit in 3-plus feet of water, my device withstood several dunks underwater in a vase and splashes in the sink. And although I could see a few water droplets underneath the battery door when I removed it, the handset continued to function just fine. In addition, it kept on ticking after being in the shower for 20 minutes, and after being fully submerged in a tall vessel for 30 minutes. It was even able to register an incoming call during its time underwater.

Software features

The handset contains a few choice features from Kyocera that make it unique. There's one feature called MagniFont, which increases the interface's text size even greater than the default "large" setting. EcoMode, is an app and a widget that lets users quickly adjust certain settings to conserve battery life. Lastly, there's an Easy Mode option that simplifies and minimizes the UI. This is especially useful for recent smartphone adopters who want an easier time navigating.
The Hydro Vibe runs on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. While that's not the most recent version of the OS, it's great that the device is the most up-to-date of the Kyocera handsets I've seen. As expected, it has several key Google apps like Chrome, Drive, Gmail, Search, Plus, Hangouts, Maps, YouTube, and a number of the Play Store portals. You can also access Google's digital-assistant feature, Now, by long-pressing the home button.

Sprint preloaded a handful of its own apps, such as its digital payment system called Sprint Money, a ringtone portal called Sprint Music Plus, Sprint TV and Movies, and Sprint Zone, which users can use to check their account information and balance. Lastly, there's Sprint ID, an app that enables you to customize your phone with preselected apps, widgets, and other items depending on which ID profile you choose.
Basic task-managing apps include a calculator, a native browser and email clients, a calendar, a clock with alarm functions, a news and weather app, a sound recorder, and a voice dialer. A few other nonstandard goodies thrown in are apps for eBay, CBS Sports, Scout, and NextRadio, as well as a flashlight app, an "In Case of Emergency" app to store pertinent contact and medical information, and an app to help set up your mobile hotspot.

Camera and video

The 8-megapixel camera's photo quality was inconsistent, and just poor in general. Most of the time, the lens had a difficult time focusing. Even after I tapped the screen multiple times to enable touch-to-focus, the camera never quite locked onto any object, which resulted in extremely blurry shots. On the occasions that it did manage to focus, photos were still disappointing. Pictures had a tendency to contain a lot of overblown lighting, especially with outdoor shots. With indoor scenery, colors looked muted and flat. For more on the phone's photo quality, check out the test pictures below. Be sure to click on each one to see it at its full resolution.
Video recording capabilities fared a bit better, though not by much. Both moving and still objects were kept in focus for the most part, and nearby audio was picked up accurately. However, the camera did lag when it came to adjusting for lighting, and audio sources that was somewhat farther than a few feet away were not picked up at all. In addition, there was a subtle but noticeable "pulsating" effect with the recordings when the lens had to readjust itself.

eBay hacked, requests all users change passwords

eBay
eBay's morning just went from bad to worse. The e-commerce site confirmed Wednesday that its corporate network was hacked and a database with users' passwords was compromised. While eBay says there is no evidence that users' financial information was accessed in the hack, the company is telling all users to change their passwords.
eBay contacted CNET after this story was initially published, saying it discovered "recently" that it was a victim of "a cyber attack on our corporate information network, which compromised a database containing eBay user passwords." The company's spokesperson told CNET there is "no evidence that any financial information was accessed or compromised."
The statement follows an odd stream of events this morning when eBay-owned PayPal posted a blog entitled "eBay, Inc. to Ask All eBay users to Change Passwords." The blog post included nothing but the title, but quickly hit the Web after it was retweeted dozens of times. The blog post was then taken down from PayPal's site, causing even more confusion for users of the online auction house.
eBay has since posted information about the hack on its official blog. The company will ask all users to change their passwords starting later on Wednesday.
eBay shares are down 1.73 percent, or 90 cents, to $51.06, following news of the hack.

"After conducting extensive tests on its networks, the company said it has no evidence of the compromise resulting in unauthorized activity for eBay users, and no evidence of any unauthorized access to financial or credit card information, which is stored separately in encrypted formats," eBay wrote in the post. "However, changing passwords is a best practice and will help enhance security for eBay users."The database, which eBay said was compromised in late February and early March, held eBay customer's names, encrypted passwords, email addresses, physical addresses, phone numbers, and dates of birth. However, the company says users' financial information was not accessed.
eBay also tried to allay concerns of PayPal users who store credit card information on the service. Although eBay owns PayPal, the online auction site says that "PayPal data is stored separately on a secure network, and all PayPal financial information is encrypted."
eBay said it detected the hack two weeks ago and engaged in forensics activities to determine what database was compromised and what was stolen. The company narrowed down the attack to "a small number of employee login credentials" stolen by cyberattackers, which it said provided access to eBay's corporate network.
Starting later on Wednesday, eBay will use email, site updates, and "other marketing channels" to request its users change their passwords. The company also encouraged its users to change the passwords on any other sites they might use with the same log-in credentials. It even ended its blog post with a security tip: "The same password should never be used across multiple sites or accounts."
eBay's hacking should be taken seriously. The e-commerce site has 128 million active users around the world. While the company has acknowledged that it will ask ever user to change their password, eBay hasn't said how many customers might have had information stolen.
With Heartbleed wreaking havoc on the Web and an increasing number of major companies having their servers hacked and personal information leaked, Web security -- or lack thereof -- is becoming a huge concern for Web users. The eBay hack could prove to be the biggest security flaw to affect users since last year's Target data breach. That hack is believed to have impacted 110 million customers and left personal information -- including names, mailing addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and debit and credit card data -- open to hackers.
CNET has contacted eBay for more information on the hack. We will update this story when we have more information.

Uber reportedly in talks to raise $500M for $12B valuation

Uber
On-demand car service Uber is apparently shifting gears on its financing ambitions.
The 4-year-old company, whose app allows customers to request rides in private cars, is in discussions with a group of fund managers to raise about $500 million, financing that would give the startup a valuation of about $12 billion, according to a Wall Street Journal report. Investors are expected to make commitments by the end of this week, the Journal reported, with deal closure coming by the end of the quarter.
CNET has contacted Uber for comment and will update this report when we learn more.
Bloomberg reported earlier this week that Uber was in talks with private equity investors on financing that would give it a valuation of about $10 billion, although it was suggested that the size and value of the possible funding could change. It appears one of Uber's recent hires could be leading the charge for this reported new round of funding. According to Bloomberg, Uber hired Cameron Poetzscher from Goldman Sachs Group in March to be in charge of its corporate development.
A $12 billion valuation would be triple the current value of the company. Last August, Uber racked up roughly $350 million in funding, which gave it a $3.5 billion valuation. Such funding would make the company one of the most valuable venture-backed startups and allow it to pull ahead of rival on-demand car service Lyft, which announced in April that it had raised $250 million in Series D funding.
Despite earlier roadblocks from government regulators and taxi commissions, Uber appears to now be on a roll, with a presence in 115 cities worldwide. The company also has snagged deals with PayPal andthe NFL.

Mid-size tablets compared: iOS vs. Android vs. Fire

The category of 8- to 9-inch tablets is seeing a robust revival.Sarah Tew/CNET
The latest tablet trend favors the 8- to 9-inch form-factor, with manufacturers slowly but surely hopping onto the bandwagon. In the middle of 7-inchers and models 10-inches and up, tablets in the 8- to 9-inch range hit a size sweet spot between small and large -- medium size, if you will.
These mid-size slates successfully satisfy the desire for a bigger screen, without sacrificing portability. For this blog, we picked the best 8 to 9-inch models across multiple operating systems to compare and contrast their pros and cons. Check out all of our top small picks here, or, if you think bigger is better, here are our best big tablets.

The iPad Mini Retina is Apple's smallest tablet.CNET

iOS

iPad Mini with Retina Display

The Apple iPad Mini is one of the most popular tablets, thanks to Apple's current cool factor. The Mini rocks an expectedly sleek aesthetic and zippy performance, however, if your apps and content aren't tied to the Apple ecosystem, there are a variety of other options that cost significantly less.
Pros: The iPad Mini's performance is smooth and fast like a G6, and iPhone users will transition seamlessly to it.
Cons: It's expensive, especially when choosing a model with more internal storage. It also lacks an expandable storage option and the 4:3 aspect ratio is better for browsing and reading, than movie watching.

Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 8.9

Fire OS

Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 8.9

The 8.9-inch version of the Kindle Fire HDX rocks a super-HD screen and a cool -- yet comfortable -- angular design. Amazon Prime members get a few perks, like streaming Amazon video, but less tech-savvy individuals will love the simple user interface and Mayday button, which connects you to tech support almost instantaneously.
Pros: Starting at $379, it's a great deal, especially since it's on the larger end of the "medium tablet" spectrum.
Cons: There is no access to the Google Play store, so app availability is limited. The simple OS also curbs how much you can customize and modify your menu screens.

Android

LG G Pad 8.3 (Google Play Edition)

The Google Play Edition of the LG G Pad 8.3 runs a pure version of Android and offers a tad more screen space than Google's flagship small slate, the Nexus 7. The 8.3-inch slate features a super-sharp screen and consistently performs silky smooth.
Pros: As a Google-branded slate, it receives the latest OS upgrades, and it offers a microSD card expansion slot.
Cons: Despite its aluminum back, it lacks a high-end feel.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro (8.4-inch)

Honorable Mention: TouchWiz

Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4

Though its built on Android, Samsung's TouchWiz is in a galaxy of its own. The heavily modified OS packs plenty of software features -- or bloatware, depending on your perspective -- and it simplifies most tasks, without removing the heavily customizable appeal of Android.
Pros: The TouchWiz interface is user friendly, and it offers more customization options than iOS and Fire OS. There is a microSD card slot for expanding your internal storage.
Cons: It's one of the more expensive mid-size tablets. The included software eats up a lot of internal storage, and the capacitive buttons on the bottom bezel are easy to unintentionally trigger.

New Google tablet said to have advanced 3D imaging

Google's Project Tango
Details of Project Tango released by Google in FebruaryGoogle/Screenshot
Google has a new tablet in the works that incorporates advanced vision capabilities that can capture more precise three-dimensional images of objects, the Wall Street Journal reported late Thursday.
Sporting a 7-inch display, the tablet will come equipped with two rear-facing cameras, infrared depth sensors, and advanced imaging software, unidentified sources told the Journal. The company plans to begin manufacturing the tablet next month, producing 4,000 prototype slates, the sources said.
CNET has contacted Google for comment and will update this report when we learn more.
The tablet is reportedly part of Google's Project Tango, which is supervised by Google's Advanced Technology and Projects group, a skunkworks division that Google inherited with its acquisition of Motorola Mobility.
The ambitious goal of Project Tango, as Google demonstrated in February, is to give smartphones the ability to do realistic 3D mapping and create virtual experiences as the phone's owner moves through the real world. The phone's sensors make more than 250 million 3D measurements every second to build a 3D model of the device's surroundings.
The project's suggested applications range from the mundane, such as capturing the dimensions of a home before furniture shopping simply by waving the phone around a room, to the helpful, such as aiding the visually impaired inside unfamiliar buildings, to the frivolous, such as turning a hallway into a virtual-reality game space.
Rival Facebook is also exploring advanced computer vision technology with its planned $2 billion acquisition of Oculus VR, the maker of virtual reality headset Oculus Rift. The headset was originally intended for use with gaming devices, but Facebook has said it plans to extend its virtual reality capabilities beyond gaming into areas such as communications, media, entertainment, and education.

iPhone buying interest continues to drop, says survey

Fewer people now expect to buy an iPhone in the next three months compared with those polled in February, says analyst Gene Munster, as iPhone 6 fever heats up.
Septimius_14.jpg
Apple's iPhone 5S. CNET
The number of people looking to buy an iPhone over the next few months has dipped yet again, according to a new survey from Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster.
Polling 1,016 consumers in the US last week about their intended smartphone purchases over the next three months, Munster's team found that 34 percent expect to buy an iPhone. That number is down from 39 percent in February, 44 percent last December, and 50 percent just after the launch of the iPhone 5S last September.
The dip in percentage is par for the course this time of year, however. Interest in buying the current model iPhone typically wanes as buzz about an upcoming new generation pops up. This time around, iPhone buyers are likely holding off purchases in anticipation of a larger-screened model.
Recent reports say Apple will bump up the display size for the iPhone 6 to 4.7 or 4.8 inches from the current 4 inches. Though these reports are still mere rumors, it seems a safe bet Apple will increase the screen size of the iPhone as consumer demand rises for big-screen phones. Other reports suggest Apple will also launch a 5.5-inch iPhablet.
Munster said he expects the unveiling of the iPhone 6 will boost buying interest to 50 percent or even higher given the anticipated new form factor.
Apple is set to kick off its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 2, where it will likely take the wraps off iOS 8, giving us a hint of what products to expect later in the year. The new version of iOS could offer improvements to Siri and Apple Maps, according to the analyst, as well as an Apple fitness app. Such an app could be a "significant sign pointing to an Apple watch" in the second half of 2014, Munster said.
